Receiving, Activating, and Tracking a Gifted Subscription
A subscription received as a gift is not managed quite like a self-subscribed one. Depending on the plan, it may end automatically or transition to a paid subscription, and the payment might be your responsibility or that of the person who gave the gift.
Activating the Gift
A gifted subscription often involves a code or a link that needs to be activated within a given timeframe. Do so without delay, as some codes expire. Activation links the service to your account, or creates one, and starts the gifted period from that moment, not from the purchase date.
Who Pays What
Two scenarios exist. Either the person paid for a fixed duration in advance, with no commitment from your part, and the service ends automatically. Or the gift is an initial period, and your payment method takes over afterward, a point to check in your subscription area.
The Real Trap: The Paid Transition
Some gifts, especially free trials, require a credit card upon activation and transition to paid at the end of the period. Immediately identify whether it's a fixed duration or a renewing subscription, and note the end date in both cases to avoid being caught off guard.
Tracking the End Date
As with any subscription, the gift's end date should be noted upon activation, with a reminder a few days prior. On that date, either the service stops cleanly, or you need to decide whether to continue. A gifted subscription not tracked can inadvertently become a paid subscription.
Gifting a Subscription Properly
If you are the one giving the gift, opt for a fixed-duration gift plan, without automatic renewal or requiring the recipient's card. The beneficiary can enjoy the service without the risk of unexpected charges. Specify the end date in your message; this prevents an unpleasant surprise and allows them to freely decide whether to continue.
Canceling or Not Renewing
If the gift transitions to paid and you don't want to continue, cancel before the transition date, just like with a standard subscription. A fixed duration, however, requires no action: it ends on its own, with no steps or payments to monitor.
A Duplicate Gift
Receiving a subscription for a service you already have happens. Depending on the case, the gifted duration may be added to your current subscription, or a refund might be possible from the giver's side. Check with the service before activating, as stacking periods is not always automatic.
The Gift and Your Data
A gifted subscription opens an account for you like any other: history, preferences, sometimes content. If the gift ends and you don't continue, this data generally remains accessible for a period before being purged. Retrieve what's important before the inactive account is closed.
Keep the Message and Receipt
The activation email, code, and any receipt from the person who gave the gift serve as proof in case of an issue: gift not credited, incorrect duration, double billing. Keep them until the end of the gifted period, ensuring everything goes smoothly.
